West Lake

West Lake, called so because it lies in the west of the city, encompassing an area of 6 square kilometers, is what the beauty of Hangzhou is all about.
Skirted by mountains on three sides, and with the fourth side bordering the urban district, West lake forms the center of a garden resort, where the mountains, caves and vales are knitted together by a maze of winding brooks and streams, studded with well sequestered ponds, and graced with kiosks, chambers and pavilions. Its famous scenic spots comprise Su Causeway, and Bai Causeway, which have partitioned the Lake into inner, outer and back lakes, Gushan (The Solitary Hill), Xiaoyingzhou (Small Fairy Island), Huxin Ting (Mid-lake Pavilion), Ruangong Dun (A mount after a provincial governor Ruangong) etc. In combination with the surrounding hills and streams, they make up the West Lake beautiful scenery.

杭州西湖，中國最著名的風景遊覽勝地，位於“上有天堂，下有蘇杭”的中國浙江省杭州市區西面，國家AAAAA級景點，中國首批國家重點風景名勝區，中國十大風景名勝之一，中國主要的觀賞性淡水湖泊之一，在中國的歷史文化和風景名勝中具有重要地位。它以秀麗的湖光山色和眾多的名勝古跡而成為聞名中外的旅遊勝地並被世人賦予“人間天堂”的美譽。西湖憑藉著上千年的歷史積澱所蘊育出的特有江南風韻和大量傑出的文化景觀而入選世界文化遺產，這同時也是現今《世界遺產名錄》中少數幾個、中國唯一一處湖泊類文化遺產。出現於人民幣壹圓紙幣背面的三潭印月景觀，體現著西湖在中國風景名勝中特殊的地位。歷代文人墨客到此遊覽，寫下不少著名詩篇，宋代大文豪蘇東坡以“欲把西湖比西子，淡妝濃抹總相宜”，點綴杭州。許仙與白娘子的傳奇故事更使得西湖名聲大振。
